VIDEO: Hiking beautiful Rohr Lake and Mt Rohr with our dog

Mount Rohr is a 2,400 meter (8,000ft) mountain summit located near Pemberton, BC. Mt Rohr is near the famous Joffre Lake. It’s advertised as an alternative hike if you get all the way to Pemberton and can’t hike Joffre for some reason, like bringing your dog with you. However, Rohr is a way more difficult hike than Joffre!

We took a long weekend to adventure to Rohr Lake and Mt. Rohr. It was so busy! We woke up at 5am on Saturday morning to start our drive from Vancouver.

Parking

We drove down the bumpy forest service road, passing a parking lot near the highway. This would be a good parking option for 2WD vehicle owners who look after their cars, but what a long hike!

We made it to the main parking area a few clicks down the road and it was completely full. Every spot a vehicle could park was taken. Lots of 2WD vehicles made it this far, including an Evo and a Tesla.

We continued down the forest service road on the 4×4 section of the road. The first part was pretty rough and narrow. Not sure of what was ahead, we did a 100-point turn and squeezed in somewhere else. After walking the entire 4×4 road to the trailhead, we realized the road was quite nice. There was a small lot at the end that was almost empty. Next time!

Hiking

The first part to the lake is a standard dirt trail. The second part is a steep boulder field. Then you are at a beautiful alpine lake!

Camping

I had read that Rohr wasn’t very busy, so I was optimistic about camping over this long weekend. But like the parking lot, every single inch of dirt around the lake was taken. We hiked further down the lake with many other increasingly nervous backpackers. People were setting up tents on the trail, in the bushes, on slopes. It was a bit sad.

After some time at the lake, we kept walking past the lake to an alpine meadow. We picked a spot where other people had camped before and settled down away from the chaos.

Mt Rohr

I was unprepared for the amount of boulders on this hike. Almost the whole thing was scrambling over different-sized boulders.

A beautiful but busy weekend!
